Empowerment Of Women

Solar oven donated by SHARE to a small village of widows as a means of economic empowerment.

SOLAR OVEN – in place for more than 5 years; a January 2010 project update:

In the small village of Ayugis in Kenya’s Lake Victoria area, SHARE donated a small commercial-size solar oven to a village of widows as a means of providing economic empowerment to them. The plan was that the women would bake using the naturally abundant solar power, perhaps convert it into a business that can sustain them. Other drivers were that the women would not be gathering wood all day to cook later in the tiny huts where they live. It is well documented that such practices are to the detriment of their health not to mention the environment. The solar oven was purchased in the USA and shipped there in 2004.

Ojectives of Women’s Empowerment

One of our main objectives in SHARE is to help the rapidly increasing numbers of women widowed by AIDS as well as other groups of women who have organized themselves to take care of the children orphaned by AIDS.

We help their agricultural projects by providing bulls, ploughs, fencing and planting material, and seeds and trees for reforestation.

We are have stared a program of solar cooking and water pasteurization with a large solar baking oven as an incentive to learning proper methods. This gives the women the freedom to pursue other money-making ventures, and aid in improving the health and financial management of their communities. They can also help in the education as well as healthcare at home. As women are freed from the drudgery of the past they can better their standard of living and join with the men in making the political decisions that influence their lives.
